A U.S. food aid team, composed of four U.S. non-governmental organizations, is evaluating the food shortage situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The team will leave Pyongyang Wednesday for North Phyongan Province and Jagang Province to carry out a two-week assessment program of the food shortage situation in the country.
A representative of the Global Resource Services, one of the four NGOs, told Xinhua that they will meet local officials, visit villages and hospitals, as well as discuss details of the supervision of food distribution.
The 11-member team also includes representatives from Mercy Corps, World Vision and Samaritan Purse.
The group will present an assessment report to the U.S. government, which will decide when and how many tons of food will finally be shipped to the DPRK.
The DPRK is facing increasingly serious food shortages due to soaring food prices and floods that occurred last year.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced last month it is planning to send 500,000 tons of food in aid to the DPRK. Source:Xinhua
