The Japanese government announced Wednesday its decision to reimpose the ban on poultry imports from Britain since avian influenza broke out again in the country.

Japan banned imports of British poultry in November 2007 due to the outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu, and lifted the ban on May 26.

The newly-confirmed avian influenza in Britain belonged to the more benign H7 strain.

The Japanese Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry downplayed fears over the new bird flu's enter into Japan because no shipment of British poultry has reached Japan since the previous ban was lifted.
