Suspected militants and police Thursday exchanged fires in northwestern Pakistan and at least four people were injured.

A group of militants were coming from Peshawar and when police, on suspicion, signaled the car to stop, the armed militants did not stop and started firing at the police.

The police returned fires and chased the car but the militants took shelter in a mosque at a small village Badrashi on the outskirts of the garrison city of Nowshera, some 40 kilometers northwest of Peshawar, capital city of North West Frontier Province, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported.

The NNI news agency quoted a police officer Yameen Khan as saying that the security forces wanted to arrest the militants alive.

He said the police were avoiding firing at the mosque and had asked the militants to surrender.

Police said the militants threw a hand grenade at the police, injuring a policeman and three civilians.
