Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Thursday that the U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama had fond memories of Sydney and would be a good friend to Australia.

Obama has claimed victory in his long battle for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Clinton and will be up against Republican nominee John McCain in the November presidential election.

"Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are first-class human beings," Rudd told Fairfax Radio Network in Brisbane.

"They understand our part of the world acutely and Senator Obama, because part of his upbringing was in this part of the world and he used to come in and out of Sydney at the time when his family was living in Indonesia, has many fond and positive memories of Australia."

"Whoever wins, Republican or Democrat, I think our interests are going to be well served," he said.
