The discretional spending of women in13 Asia-Pacific markets will reach 516 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, a strong consumption power in driving the regional economy, according to a report released by MasterCard Worldwide at the Global Summit of Women (GSW) 2008 here Friday.
MasterCard annually releases the index of women's advancement. It is based on their research into women's participation in the labor force, tertiary education, managerial positions and above median income in 13 markets in the Asia Pacific region.
A generation of young women is filling the rising labor demand in Asia, said a senior official with MasterCard Worldwide, these women are well-educated, with professional careers and single young life style.
The world is entering an age of women, who are making 80 percent of the purchase decision of the family and shaping the consumer market, she said. The 13 markets include those in Australia, News Zealand, Chinese mainland, Hong Kong of China, China's Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The GSW is an annual forum bringing women leaders in business, government and companies together for changes of ideas and practices. This year's forum attracts over 900 delegates from about 70 countries.
