Senior secretaries to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak offered to resign en masse on Friday, holding themselves responsible for the escalating dispute over the government's controversial U.S. beef import deal, the presidential office said.

"The collective resignation offer by all seven senior presidential secretaries was delivered to President Lee via presidential chief of staff Yu Woo-ik," presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said in a media briefing.

Spokesman Lee, officially senior presidential secretary for public information, is among the seven secretaries offering to resign, Yonhap news agency reported.

"Chief of Staff Yu himself has already offered to step down twice. We senior secretaries can no longer stand idle amid the worsening domestic political circumstances. We're fully responsible for the circumstances and thus are willing to quit to show respect for public opinion," said the spokesman.

He noted that the senior presidential secretaries had already expressed their intention to resign individually or en masse to Lee, but the president refused to comply each time, citing inappropriate timing.
