Bangladeshi former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is leaving for the United States via London by British airlines for medical treatment Thursday after being released Wednesday by a government executive order.

Hasina arrived at the Zia International Airport in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka Thursday morning. The flight is expected to take off at 8:20 am.

Hasina will have a stopover in London to visit her sister who lives there.

The former prime minister who ruled Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 was released Thursday for an interim period after having been detained for almost 11 months since July 16 last year on corruption charges.
