An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit eastern Honshu, Japan at 07:50 a.m. local time Saturday (2350 GMT Friday), according to a bulletin released by the Hong Kong Observatory Saturday morning.

The epicenter was initially determined to be 39.1 degrees north latitude and 140.6 degrees east longitude, about 80 km south- southeast of Akita, Japan.
