Less poor people go to fair rice shops run by paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka after the government stopped subsidy and increased the rice price recently.
A staff working in one fair rice shop in Dhaka told Xinhua Sunday only a few people come to buy rice after the government increased the coarse rice from 25 taka (about 36 cents) per kg to 30 taka (about 43 cents) per kg early this month.
Thousands of men, women and children were seen in long queue for hours to buy the rice from these shops since they went into operation last September. But this scene no longer exists with the price hike.
Bangladesh lost huge food grains particularly paddy due to floods and cyclone Sidr last year.
Besides, price-hike of rice on international market also cast adverse impact on the country's domestic market.
The prices of rice in Bangladeshi local market almost doubled or tripled over the last one year which are beyond the buying capacity of millions of poor people.
