South Korean President Lee Myung-bakhas said he will fully reflect people's wish in the upcoming reorganization of his government, indicating that he would replace his prime minister and chief of staff, the Yonhap news agency reported Monday.
Lee made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday with a opposition leader who asked him to make a large-scale shakeup of his Cabinet and presidential staff to allay mounting public anger over his government's decision to open South Korea's market to U.S. beef despite lingering health risks of mad cow disease.
"I agree to the view that the (planned shakeup of) the Cabinet and presidential secretariat should satisfy the people's wish," Lee told the opposition Liberty Forward Party leader, Lee Hoi-chang. "I'll fully reflect the people's sentiment in the reshuffle."
Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and his entire Cabinet offered to resign last week, along with seven senior presidential secretaries, to take responsibility for the political crisis caused by the beef deal.
