More than 2,000 of anti-government demonstrators rallied at Thailand's Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Bangkok on Monday, continuing their "mini-rally strategy" to call for the step-down of the government.
The demonstrators, led by the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), marched to the poll agency office in the morning. They lambasted some EC members who were accused of losing their impartiality and making decisions to favor the ruling People Power Party led by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.
The gathering was the latest move of the anti-government PAD which recently launched a "mini-rally strategy" to several government offices as part of its campaign to pressure the Samak government to resign as the street protests entered their fourth week.
According to the Thai News Agency, more than 300 police officers were deployed to prevent any untoward incident. The demonstration brought the heavily-congested traffic around the venue.
Police earlier said two small bombs exploded Sunday night outside the Bangkok office of Sondhi Limthongkul, a core PAD leader and stauchest anti-government protest leader. No one was injured in the incident.
Police said they believe the incident was meant to threaten the PAD core leader rather than harm anyone. An investigation is underway to learn who was behind the incident.
