United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said Tuesday that national unity is important for Palestinians to achieve their goal of a sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Sheikh Khalifa made the remarks at a meeting with visiting Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal, the Emirates News Agency reported.

National unity is the cornerstone of fulfilling all efforts of the Palestinians, he said.

The president added that only national unity can help find a just and peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli issue on the basis of Arab nations' peace initiative and in line with international resolutions.

He called on all factions in Palestine to attach importance to the people's interests, saying he hoped that Egypt would succeed in its efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians in the occupied territories, especially the Gaza Strip.
