The Bangladesh caretaker government has decided to relax some rules of the Emergency Power Rules (EPR)to facilitate electioneering in areas where local elections will be held.
Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said at a press briefing here Wednesday that the decision came as the Election Commission is taking preparation to hold election to some of the local-government bodies.
The decision is "finalized to relax some rules and regulations of the Emergency Power Rules during the election," he said.
The relaxation of the emergency rules, which do not allow now outdoor rallies or street campaigns, would take effect "immediate after announcement of the poll schedules," he said.
And the EPR relaxation will be applicable only for the areas of election, he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Dr A&M Shamsul Huda Wednesday said election schedules for four city corporations and nine municipalities would be announced Friday.
Bangladesh President Iajuddin Ahmed declared state of emergency on Jan. 11 last year to quell political violence between major political parties over abortive parliamentary polls set for Jan. 22 last year.
The current caretaker government announced in May the parliamentary elections will be held in the third week of December this year.
