Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said Tuesday that Japan welcomes the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s declaration of its nuclear programs as the step would help accelerate the resolution of the nuclear issue.
As the nuclear issue is not only related with the relations between the DPRK and the United States, but also related with the security situation of the region and Japan, Japan welcomes progress on the issue, Fukuda told reporters at his official residence later in the day.
On Washington's scheduled delisting of the DPRK from its list of nations sponsoring terrorism, Fukuda said the resolution of the DPRK's past abduction of Japanese nationals is necessary and called on the U.S. side to take the issue seriously into consideration.
Japanese media said the prime minister's remarks represented a softening of position as Japan had been demanding that the United States refrain from delisting the DPRK from terrorist nations until the abduction issue is addressed.
