Thousands of Aucklanders were moving south, reversing a previous northward population drift, Statistics New Zealand figures showed on Wednesday.
Statistics New Zealand's internal migration report said the region suffered a net loss of 15,000 people between 2001 and 2006.
The figures showed more people were moving out of Auckland into neighboring regions such as Bay of Plenty, Waikato and further south to Canterbury.
It also showed more people were moving to the South Island, rather than leaving it for the warmer north.
But the report said there is no risk of Auckland emptying out. When the number of people moving into the region from overseas is counted, it more than makes up for the number leaving.
The research said the most common reasons for a long distance move are to be with family, a relationship break-up or a new job.
