India Wednesday issued E-passports scheme with Indian President Pratibha Patil becoming the first person to have got the country's first E-passport copy from the Indian External Affairs Ministry.

The E-passports launched are meant for the diplomats and it will be issued for the category of officials from next month and general people from September next year, according to a news release by the Indian External Affairs Ministry.

Some eight million E-passports will be issued by 2010. The E-passports will have an electronic chip containing all personal data and help reduce the procedure at immigration.

The new passports have been designed indigenously in India by the Central Passport Organization, the India Security Press, Nasikand IIT, Kanpur.

It is compatible with international standards and identity cards and will protect against fraud and security breaches and it is easy to verify the authenticity of E-passports, said the ministry.

A total of 41 countries have adopted E-passports and India is one of the first developing country to have this system.
