South Korean President Lee Myung-bakon Thursday urged the country to end a protracted dispute over the safety of U.S. beef and launch efforts for economic revival.
The government issued earlier Thursday a ministerial notice on the resumption of American beef imports.
"Now is the time to concentrate our capabilities on economic revival after putting an end to various disputes over U.S. beef imports," Lee said in an emergency meeting with Cabinet ministers convened after the resumption of beef imports from the U.S.
"A persistent chaotic situation in state affairs would eventually cause damage to the livelihood of ordinary people," he said.
According to participants in the meeting, Lee's Cabinet ministers discussed ways to strengthen public relations to convince the public of the safety of U.S. beef.
The government's agreement in mid-April to fully open the market to U.S. beef triggered daily candlelight protest rallies nationwide amid public fear of mad cow disease. Source:Xinhua
