South Korea's Prime Minister Han Seung-soo will issue a public statement Thursday to address local concerns over the safety of U.S. beef, officials said.

"The prime minister will ask for the people's understanding on the resumption of imports," an official of the premier's office said. "He will also explain in detail the government measures on strict quarantine inspections to assure the public of the safety of U.S. beef."

It will be the second public statement delivered by the prime minister on the domestic uproar over U.S. beef.

South Korea lifted its ban on American beef imports Thursday for the first time since the imports were suspended last year, after reaching an additional deal with the U.S. last week on stricter import conditions.
