A gunman was holding a woman hostage in New Zealand South Island's largest city of Christchurch on Friday, Newstalk ZB radio reported.

Police said the drama began when they were called to an address in Morley Ave.

Armed police have surrounded the scene and the public were being warned that they would be kept away until the situation was resolved.
