A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman islands in the Indian Ocean at Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was initially determined to be 10.8 degrees north latitude and 91.8 degrees east longitude, about 140 km southwest of Port Blair of the Andaman Islands, India. It struck at a depth of 35 km, USGS said.

A preliminary quake report of the Indian Meteorological Department said the earthquake's magnitude was 6.1. A 5.4-magnitude quake shook the same area in the morning.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted in the same area on Friday.
