The South Korean government again issued a strongly worded statement on Sunday, vowing to sternly crack down on illegal and violent street demonstrations by opponents over the resumption of U.S. beef imports.

In the statement -- jointly issued by the justice, public administration, culture and labor ministers -- the government expressed deep concern about the increasingly explosive protests and warned that it will punish violent demonstrators to the fullest extent of the law, according the Yonhap news agency.
