Malaysian police said that it would investigate a new sodomy claim against Parti Keadilan Rakyat(National Justice Party) adviser Anwar Ibrahim in a fair manner, Malaysia's national news agency Bernama said on Sunday.
The police would investigate the case in a fair manner purely from the legal perspective and not from political angles, Bernama quoted Malaysia Police's Criminal Investigation Department Director Bakri Zinin as saying.
Police would conduct the investigation thoroughly on the victim but need a bit of time, he said.
Bernama said that a 23-year-old man lodged a report with a police station here on Saturday, claiming he was sodomized by the former deputy prime minister on June 26 at a luxury apartment in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Sunday said that he was leaving to the police to investigate the authenticity of the sodomy allegation against Anwar Ibrahim, according to Bernama.
Bernama reported that Anwar had denied the allegation and said it was a "total fabrication" and a repeat of the methods used against him in 1998 when he was sacked as deputy prime minister over similar allegations.
Badawi, who is also chairman of the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN), denied claims that the BN planned to curtail the resurgence of Anwar's political career by hurling all sorts of allegations against him, Bernama said.
Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Sunday that it was a new case and it was up to the government to decide on the sodomy allegation against Anwar Ibrahim.
