South Korean and French presidents are scheduled to hold a summit in October on the sidelines of the seventh ASEM Summit scheduled in Beijing.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will meet with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak in his capacity as the leader of the country chairing the European Union, rather than as the president of the nation, the Yonhap News Agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying on Tuesday.

France assumed rotating leadership of the European Union on Tuesday for a six-month tenure.

"The two nations' presidents will meet during the ASEM summit period to discuss various issues including the planned South Korea-EU free trade agreement," the South Korean Foreign Ministry official said.
