Philippine police have arrested a former opposition congressman and four ex-military officers for alleged participation in the failed rebellion attempts to sabotage the administration under president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, police said Wednesday.

Former congressman and human rights lawyer Homobono Adaza were nabbed on his way to a lunch party in a shopping mall in the Pasigcity of the national capital region, officials with National Police 's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group said.

Police refused to reveal more details of the arrest.

The four other arrested suspects, all former military officers, were linked to an alleged rebellion plot in 2004.

Adaza, a former opposition congressmen during the strongman president Ferdinand Marcos' rule, has lately served as counsel to members of mutinous officers involved in various coup plots during Arroyo's term as president.

Reports said Adaza and the other four will be presented to media on Thursday and are likely to be charged for "proposal to commit coup d'etat," according to Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez.

Adaza's lawyer Argee Guevarra mocked the police arrest as "a blatant violation of human rights."

He told television channel ANC on late Wednesday night that the five will be charged with a crime that does not exist and which they did not commit.
