Suspected insurgents shot dead a couple and set their bodies on fire early Tuesday in Thailand's deep southern province Pattani, media here reported.
The couple, both construction workers, were killed when they rode a motorcycle to work in Pattani's Mayo district, according to a report by Bangkok Post website.
After they were gunned down, the attackers showered their bodies with oil and burnt them before fleeing the village. Police have set up checking points in an attempt to track them down.
Some 3,500 people have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces -- Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani since insurgent violence renewed from January 2004. Thai authorities have blamed Muslim-ethnic separatists in the south as the culprit.
