Top leaders of India's United Progressive Alliance met here on Friday to fine tune their political strategy as the ruling coalition braced towards a trust vote in the Parliament in the wake of the withdrawal of support by Left parties, plunging the government into a minority.

A date for convening a special session of the Parliament to seek trust vote was also being discussed, according to the Press Trust of India. government sources said it is expected to be convened on July 22.

The meeting of the UPA allies was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

At the meeting, Sonia Gandhi thanked the Left allies for their four-year support to the government. She also expressed confidence that the government will win majority in the confidence motion.

"We thank the Left for their support though we cannot carry them with us on the nuclear deal," Gandhi said.

Earlier, the Left parties, pointing to the Prime Minister's statement that the government would move forward on the deal, announced that the time had come to end their support on Tuesday.

The Left controls 59 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, and is an important supporter of the Congress party-led UPA government.

With support of other small political groups, the UPA is hopeful that the government could bank on the support of 273 members in the Lok Sabha which currently has 543 members.
