An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, rocked New Zealand's lower southwest of South Island on Saturday, the GN Science said.

The earthquake, happened at 12:08 local time (00:08 GMT) Saturday, 80 km southwest of Te Anau at a depth of 100 km.

GNS Science said the quake would have been felt in Fiordland, Southland and Central Otago, but at only moderate intensity because of the 100 km depth.
