Afghan interior ministry said on Sunday that the Taliban militants raided a district in Afghanistan's eastern Nuristan province.

"Pakistani Taliban on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (local time) crossed the border from Chitral area and attacked Barg-e-Matal district and the fighting is still continuing," Zamarai Bashari, spokesman for interior ministry, told newsmen at a press conference.

He also said that Afghan police with the support of locals had been defending their positions and so far "five Taliban had been killed and 13 others sustained injuries."

"One local Shir Mohammad was martyred yesterday in the firefight," Bashari added.

Reinforcement had been sent to the area to repel insurgents' attack, the spokesman said.

The Afghan government often accuses Pakistan of backing Taliban insurgent but Islamabad terms all the allegations as baseless and rejects it.
