The Philippine government will continue to work on the case of a Filipina housemaid to further reduce her years in jail after the Emir of Kuwait granted the commutation of her death sentence two weeks ago, Philippine Vice President Noli de Castro said Friday.
De Castro, also the presidential adviser on Filipino workers, said the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait was asked to try to secure an affidavit of forgiveness from the victim's family to further lessen the Filipino maid's prison sentence.
Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah signed a decree commuting May Vecina's death sentence to life imprisonment on July8. Vecina was found guilty by the courts of killing her employer's youngest son Salem Sulaiman Al-Otaib on Jan. 6 last year. She was also alleged to have tried to kill the victim's 13-year-old brother and hurt his 17-year-old sister.
At her trial, Vecina claimed that she suffered physical and mental abuse from her employer, which led her to lose her mind. But the Kuwait court upheld the death sentence, media reports said.
