Singapore Friday said it will set up an inter-agency committee to ensure stable food supply for the city-state.
The new committee, jointly led by the Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Trade and Industry, will examine Singapore's farming policy while investing in food production overseas, local TV Channel NewsAsia reported Friday night.
Singapore's National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan announced this at the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's (AVA) Food Safety Awards Night.
He said, "We need to recognize that many of the factors that are affecting the food supply situation today are not temporary ones. In fact there are also medium-term and long-term issues and structural ones that are taking place."
"This Committee will study the changes and trends in global food supply, and examine policies on enhancing Singapore's food supply with a view to manage supply and price shocks, in consultation with our industry players," he was quoted as saying.
To help mitigate the impact of rising food prices, the food safety authority has so far allowed more than 10,000 establishments in 29 countries to export meat to Singapore, and has turned to frozen meat as a cheaper alternative.
