Afghanistan National Army (ANA) on Thursday killed nearly three dozen Taliban insurgents in the war-torn country's unrest Zabul province, Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said.

"The insurgents were attempting to ambush a convoy of ANA in Bazargan village of Zabul province on Kabul-Kandahar highway today," Azimi told Xinhua.

However, ANA surrounded the militants and firefight began at 11:30 a.m. local time and lasted to 3:30 p.m. local time during which 34 enemies were killed, Azimi said.

"Four hours' fighting also left two personnel of ANA injured," he said, "and two other militants were arrested."

Meanwhile, provincial deputy police chief Jailani Khan confirmed the clashes between ANA and Taliban fighters and put the number of Taliban casualties as 37.

"Over 30 weapons and ammunitions of Taliban outfit were captured on the spot," Jailani Khan said. "The highway is now secured and re-opened."

Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, the purported Taliban spokesman, told Xinhua via phone from an unknown hideout that the outfit ambushed ANA convoy, successfully destroying two army's vehicles and killing over 12 Afghan troops.

Afghanistan has witnessed an upsurge of violence and riot throughout its territory over the past months while militancy and conflicts left more than 2,300 people including over 700 civilians dead so far this year.
