At least six people were killed while another 11 people were injured in a fire at a building in South Korea's Yongin City on Friday, police said.
The fire took place at about 1:20 a.m. local time (1650 GMT Thursday) on the ninth floor of the 10-story building in Yongin City, 40 km south of Seoul, police said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 40 minutes, but they said they could not get to all victims due to a maze of corridors, with 63 rooms on the floor of 559.9 square meters, police said.
Local media reported that the victims were taken to nearby hospitals while eight others with minor injuries returned home after medical treatment.
"The closed structure (of the floor) caused poisonous gas to victimize those sleeping in the rooms," a firefighter said. "Room No. 6 and part of corridors were burnt down, but the fire did not burn most of other rooms."
Police said there were signs that the fire started in two different rooms, and those rooms are too distant to catch fire by the same cause. An investigation was under way.
