Singapore is drafting a "pragmatic and result-oriented" blueprint to create a sustainable, green but lively country.
"Our vision is for Singapore to be a lively yet live-able home, with a vibrant economy and high quality living environment," said Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan, who co-chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Sustainable Development on Monday.
He added the challenge is to come up with a "pragmatic and result-oriented" blueprint for the future.
He emphasized that economic development would not be sacrificed in going green.
"By planning now for Singapore's sustainable development in the next 10 to 15 years, we ensure two key things. First, we can be more efficient in using resources to grow our economy and stay competitive. Second, we can ensure that, even as our population grows, all of us continue to enjoy clean air and clean water in an attractive, quality living environment," he said.
The committee identified three key areas, including resource management, specifically energy efficiency, pollution control and the quality of the physical environment.
The committee highlighted that measures to enhance sustainability such as improving resource efficiency should result in cost-savings to businesses and individuals.
The committee also launched a website to seek public feedback on the areas for review.
