Vietnam and France have agreed to promote their relationship to higher plane for mutual benefit, and proposed the two nations foster bilateral cooperation in such fields as food, energy and transport, local newspaper Vietnam Newsreported Tuesday.
During the talks between Nguyen Phu Trong, Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, the country's top legislature, and French Senate President Christian Poncelet in Hanoi capital on Monday, Poncelet proposed the two countries tighten their cooperation to solve global issues, particularly shortages of food and energy.
"We should work together to ensure food security," Poncelet said, noting that Vietnam is the world's second biggest rice exporter, and France is also a cereal exporter.
He also proposed that Vietnam, which has great potential for hydroelectric development, should consider promoting other energy sources like wind and solar.
Poncelet said he promised to beef up cooperation with Vietnam in other fields, including healthcare, water supply, environment and child adoption.
France will continue to support Vietnam to expand its multilateral cooperation with the European Union, of which France is the current alternate president, Poncelet said. He pledged to lobby the block to recognize Vietnam as a market economy.
Trong asked France to expand its cooperation with Vietnam in the fields of oil and gas exploration and exploitation, education, science, technology, infrastructure development and transport.
The Vietnamese top legislator said he wanted France to invest more in important and large projects in his country.
