Myanmar top leader Senior-General Than Shwe on Friday said that an ASEAN community will benefit Myanmar citizens along with others of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in sharing the fruits of peace and stability, prosperity and socio-cultural development.
Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, made the remarks in his message on the occasion of the 41st anniversary ASEAN Day.
He urged the country's people to strive together in building the ASEAN community in accordance with this year's theme of "One ASEAN Identity, One ASEAN Community by 2015".
ASEAN's three pillars are known as political security community, economic community and socio-cultural community.
Noting that Myanmar has ratified the ASEAN Charter last month, Than Shwe said this year is of special importance and a transition for ASEAN members as they are being engaged in preparation to implement the provisions of the charter, adding that "the charter, a crucial milestone of ASEAN, will be the constitution of ASEAN and the member countries shall be able to integrate among themselves for the future of the association in accordance with the objectives of the charter".
It has been witnessed that ASEAN has been responding to natural disasters and pandemic in a more effective and timely manner through well-coordinated disaster management and emergency response mechanisms, he said, pointing out that ASEAN is assisting Myanmar to recover from the devastation resulting from Cyclone Nargis which severely hit the country early last May.
Myanmar joined the ASEAN along with Laos in July 1997.
