A shallow earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Ritcher scale rocked Sumatra Island on Friday, a local meteorology agency said here.
The quake struck at 13:37 Jakarta time (0637GMT) with the epicenter at 140 kilometers southeast Pagar Selatan town of Mentawai Island in West Sumatra province of Sumatra Island and at 10 kilometers under sea bed, an official of the agency Muhammad Ramdan told Xinhua, but giving no details about casualties and damage.
Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movement.
