The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) turned unable to gather consensus on a national unity government within the given deadline on Friday by the president.
The 10 days long given by Nepali President Ram Baran Yadav calling the CPN-M which is the single largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) to form a national unity government ended on Friday evening.
"We couldn't meet the deadline about forming the new government by the president. Now the Constituent Assembly will decide about the new government," CPN-M Chairman Prachanda told reporters after the main parties failed to reach conclusion on Friday.
"There is still a strong possibility of forming national unity government. Now we will intensify the talks with political parties to pick up a common candidate for prime minister," he added.
"Even though we tried, we couldn't make consensus on common minimum program and power sharing of the new government on a given time. We will try to reach common understanding on these issues and make a national unity government from the CA," Prachanda said.
According to Nepal's Interim Constitution if a national unity government can't be formed by political parties, the Prime Minister shall be elected by the simple majority of the Constituent Assembly.
On Friday the meetings between the four largest parties in the Constituent Assembly, the CPN-M, Nepali Congress (NC), the Communist party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) and Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF) ended inconclusively about forming new government.
"We have not reached conclusion but it doesn't mean a national unity government can not be formed," Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel told reporters, adding that the attempt to make consensus would go on.
"Nepali Congress has not claimed the leadership of new government. We want the issue of leadership be settled after making consensus on common minimum program, power sharing and building the atmosphere of trust," he added.
However the CPN-UML and MPRF have said the CPN-M has the right to take the leadership of national unity government as it emerged as the single largest party in the Constituent Assembly.
Nepal's president Ram Baran Yadav extended the deadline for three days to the CPN-M after the seven days deadline to form government expired on Tuesday.
Nepal was declared a federal democratic republic in the first CA meeting on May 28. However, due to arguments over power sharing, the CPN-M failed to forge consensus among the CA parties to form anew government till now when the CA results have come out for around three months.
