Smuggling of contraband items in Singapore dipped 4 percent in the first half of this year compare with the same period of last year, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Monday.
The ICA dealt with 17,700 smuggling cases in the first half of the year, it said in its mid-year report card.
Smuggling cigarettes into Singapore still tops the list. But the number of incidents has dropped to 9,200 in the first half of this year from 12,000 in the same period of last year.
The quantity of cigarettes seized also reduced from 1.2 million packets last year to 393,000 this year.
The number of pirated discs smuggled into Singapore also dropped 23 percent, said the ICA.
However, the number of security-related items seized saw a 20 percent increase. Items that travelers attempted to smuggle into Singapore ranged from knuckle dusters and machetes to samurai swords and musket antique guns, said the ICA.
The authorities said heightened checks explain the 41 percent decline in the number of immigration offenders arrested at the checkpoints in the first half of this year. Source: Xinhua
