Myanmar official media Friday urged the country's people to strive for more development of nationalities inhabiting in border areas.
Noting that the government is nurturing the country's youth to become intellectuals and intelligentsia who are familiar with modern science and technology, the New Light of Myanmar said in its editorial that measures are also being taken for the young nationalities from the border regions by opening training schools for the development of nationalities youth.
The editorial underlined that the nationalities people have enjoyed fruits of political, economic and social improvement since the national race development projects started implementation in 1989, disclosing that the government has spent over 231,113 million Kyats (about 200 million U.S. dollars) on the progress of border areas.
As the country's border areas are nearly all rural ones, Myanmar leaders have stressed the implementation of a special project for progress of border areas and rural areas development, pointing out that the development of a country depends on the progress of rural areas especially in the sectors of health and education.
Over the past two decades, construction and maintenance of roads, extension of drinking water and irrigation water supply, stepping up electricity supply, conducting livestock breeding and establishing vocational training schools in the rural and border areas were witnessed, observers said.
According to sectoral reports occasionally presented by respective government ministries at their meetings, 5,382 km of earthen road, 3,536 km of gravel road, 616 km of tar roads have been built and 5,433 km renovated in border areas since 1989.
A total of 73 big, 988 small and 40 suspension bridges were also built during the period in the areas.
In the education sector, 852 primary, 90 middle and 92 high schools were built in the border areas, while in the public relation sector, 109 TV retransmitting stations were constructed and in the agricultural sector, 117 farms, 46 dams and 11 tractor camps were introduced. Source: Xinhua
