Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Tuesday that Indonesian diplomats should have rational and realistic responses when facing diplomatic disputes.
"We would lose our national interest in a dispute settlement if we just act emotionally," Yudhoyono said at the Foreign Policy Breakfast at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The president mentioned some high cases such as disputes on Ambalat area with Malaysia (March 2005) and Papuan asylum seekers with Australia (January 2006).
He said that he was persistent to seek diplomatic solution with Malaysia, although some groups kept shouting to make war or cut diplomatic relationship with Malaysia.
"If I was emotional at that time, the spirit of ASEAN would be vanished, both of Indonesia and Malaysia would suffer big loss of trillions because of the possible war at that time. But finally, we could win our sovereignty on the area by rational and realistic approach in building diplomacy with Malaysia," he said.
