Nine would-be suicide bombers were killed as they attempted to target U.S. military base in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province, police said Tuesday.
"A group of suicide bombers attempted to influence the base of the U.S.-led Coalition forces in Khost province late Monday night but the Coalition and Afghan forces pounded the insurgents from air and ground killing nine of them," a senior police officer Abdul Qayun Baqizai told Xinhua.
He also added that two civilians were killed and three others were injured during the conflict and fire exchange.
However, he did not comment if there were any casualties on the Coalition troops based in the area.
No U.S. military officials were immediately available to make comments.
Meantime, Afghan interior ministry in a statement issued Tuesday said that the police had arrested a Taliban commander Mullah Basir in Khost neighboring province Paktia, but did not mention the date of his arrest.
The statement also added another Taliban commander, Qari Nejat, along with his five comrades was killed Monday night.
Eight more Taliban militants and two policemen were killed elsewhere in conflicts in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar and western Nimroz provinces on Monday, officials said.
Taliban militants fighting Afghan and international troops have yet to make comment.
Militancy and conflicts have left more than 3,000 people dead so far this year in Afghanistan.
