Kim Yong Nam, top legislator of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Wednesday expressed his condolence on the death of Zambian President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, the official KCNA news agency reported Thursday.

In a message to Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda, he praised the late president for making "a great contribution to the welfare of the Zambian people and the development of the country" and "boosting the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries."

The 59-year-old president died Tuesday in France, seven weeks after a stroke.
