Security forces killed as many as 16 militants in an exchange of fire in northwest Pakistan on Friday.
Security forces stopped a vehicle suspected to be carrying miscreants at Sour bridge check post near Doaba, Hangu district of North West Frontier Province, a statement released by the army said.
People in the vehicle refused to get down from the vehicle when security forces asked them to do so. However, after insistence by Security Forces personnel, one individual got down from the vehicle and started moving towards the check post, said the statement.
"He was cautioned to stop and on refusal was engaged with fire. Resultantly he exploded," said the statement.
The others in the vehicle opened fire on the security forces and were retaliated. The vehicle also exploded and it was believed that the explosion took places as another suicide bomber was sitting inside the vehicle.
The security forces arrested one militant alive. Initial investigation revealed that both the suicide bombers were of foreign origin, said the statement.
