Five security escorts of a local official were killed in the southern Philippines after policemen at a checkpoint opened fire at their convoy, reports said on Saturday.
The shooting occurred Friday night near a village called Santo Nino in Zamboanga del Sur province, Philippine TV network GMA News reported. Vice Town mayor Wilson Nadang, who was in the convoy, was unhurt in the shooting.
Nadang said his group was ambushed, but a police report claimed the politician's convoy did not stop at the checkpoint prompting the security forces to open fire at the unidentified vehicles.
A police report said the occupants of the two vehicles fired back at the policemen, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported on the police side. Source:Xinhua
