Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Tuesday that he will consider using lottery revenue to boost Olympic funding following Great Britain's success at the Beijing Games.
He said the government would learn from the British model of using the lottery system to fund sport programs.
A lack of sports funding has been blamed for Australia's slide down the Olympic table from fourth in 2000 and 2004 to sixth this year while Britain has jumped from 10th place in 2000 and 2004 to fourth in Beijing.
Rudd said to the Nine Network TV that it was among the things to be considered when Sports Minister Kate Ellis reviews funding.
"There's been some studies apparently by previous governments of this, I haven't seen them, which has said it may not work," Rudd said.
He confirmed sports funding would be boosted ahead of the London Games, saying it is the right thing to do.
"When it comes to sports funding, it's not either or - either community sport or elite sport, we'll be doing both," he added.
