Unknown armed men abducted a Japanese aid worker in Afghanistan's relatively peaceful eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday, Interior Ministry spokesman ZamaraiBashari said.

"It was this morning that unknown armed men kidnapped the Japanese man from Kuz Kunar district and took him to unknown location," Basahari told Xinhua.

The Japanese man working with a water supply project in the area was took away by the armed men as he arrived at the site of his work, Basahari said.

The police had launched a siege and search operation to secure the safe release of the abductee, he said.

It is the first time that a Japanese national has been kidnapped in Afghanistan.

No official from Japanese embassy was immediately available to make comment.
