Sri Lanka's eastern port town of Trincomalee was attacked by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels Tuesday night, defense officials and local media said.

Officials from the Ministry of Defense said explosions occurred in Trincomalee a short while ago and they are checking details.

The local English newspaper Daily Mirror said on its website that an aircraft of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had dropped bombs near the Trincomalee Navy base and harbor causing slight damages.

The website quoted Navy sources as saying that the Navy retaliated by firing at the aircraft upon which the aircraft had withdrawn.
