The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) has in principle agreed to provide the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) second position in the cabinet, local newspaper The Kathmandu Post reported Thursday.
CPN-M Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda, agreed to the demand of the 3rd largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) CPN-UML during a meeting with senior CPN-UML leader Bam Dev Gautam on Wednesday, according to the daily.
"Although the two parties haven't reached a formal agreement over the issue, the CPN-M has in principle agreed to provide the CPN-UML second position in the government," said CPN-UML leader Bhim Rawal.
He said both parties will soon hold a meeting to reach a formal agreement over the issue.
The CPN-UML, a major coalition partner, has refused to join the CPN-M-led government without second position in the government.
The cabinet of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal was formed last Friday. Among the eight ministers sworn in, four are from CPN-M, while the other four are from the fourth largest CA party, the Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF).
Due to dispute with the CPN-M over who should be the senior-most minister after Prime Minister and CPN-M Chairman Prachanda in the cabinet, the CPN-UML on Friday afternoon decided not to have its ministers sworn in.
On Aug. 15, the CPN-UML and MPRF, together with most of the other minor CA parties, jointly voted Prachanda for the post of prime minister. A former agreement among the three parties has been reached that the CPN-UML will get the home ministry, local development, forest, water resources, youth and sports, and industry and commerce in the cabinet, and possibly the post of deputy prime minister.
