Afghan National Security Forces and the U.S.-led Coalition forces on Thursday put down militants raid on a Coalition base in southern Afghan province of Uruzgan killing over a dozen militants, said a Coalition statement released here on Friday.

Militants simultaneously attacked the base and checkpoints with mortars from multiple firing positions using small-arms fire, machine-guns and rocket-propelled grenades, the statement said.

"The joint force returned fire with small-arms fire, mortar and called in close-air support, killing the militants," it said.

"Two Afghan security guards were killed in the fighting but there were no casualties on ANSF or Coalition forces, it added.

In another incident, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) accidentally killed three civilians as ISAF failed to stop the civilian vehicle at a check point on Thursday in northern Afghan province of Kunduz.

"It occurred in the Kunduz district of Kunduz Province where two vehicles approached a check point run by ISAF forces and ANSF and were directed to stop but drove on," said an ISAF statement released here on Friday.

"ISAF soldiers fired warning shots in a safe direction away from the vehicles but were eventually forced to fire at the first vehicle when it refused to stop," it said, "two children and one woman were killed and two others were wounded."

The two injured civilians were treated for their injuries by ISAF medical personnel at the scene and brought to a nearby hospital for further treatment, it added.

The U.S.-led Coalition forces last week in conjunction with Afghan army carried out ground and air attacks against the suspected hideout of militants in western Herat province but left over 90 civilians dead.

Afghan cabinet has called for regulating the authority and responsibilities of international troops in the war-torn country for the continuous civilian casualties in the past years.

Taliban insurgents who staged a violent comeback three years ago have intensified their activities targeting Afghan and international troops over the past weeks to mount pressure on the government despite around 70,000 foreign troops stationed in the war-torn country vowing to keep peace and help reconstruction here.

Conflicts and spiraling insurgency have claimed the lives of over 3,000 people so far this year.
