Six flood victims have so far lost their lives to diseases in temporary camps across Sunsari district, in southeastern Nepal, local newspaper The Himalayan Times reported Tuesday.

According to Sunsari Superintendent of Police (SP) Yadavraj Khanal, an infant child of Holi Mohammad of Sripur-8 died of pneumonia in Sunsari's Babiya-based Saraswoti High School camp on Monday morning.

Five others, including an Indian woman displaced by the flood, lost their lives to cold related diseases, Sunsari Chief District Officer Durga Bhandari said.

According to District Natural Disaster Relief and Rescue Management Committee, seven persons, including five children, in Haripur area of the district are battling with diarrhoea, pneumonia and dizziness. They are undergoing treatment in local health posts and hospitals, as they could not be rushed to district and region headquarters due to disruption in traffic.

Sunsari's Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rupam Lama saidthe death toll might rise since 43 flood victims in 29 camps were critically ill.

Over 5,000 people displaced by mid-August Saptakoshi flood, are suffering from various health related problems, local media reported on last Thursday.

Around 10 Village Development Committees (VDCs) were in full or partial inundation in Sunsari and Saptari districts bordering India, some 220 km southeast of capital Kathmandu, after the embankment of the Saptakoshi River suddenly broke down on Aug. 18.

The displaced people in Sunsari district are taking shelter at 23 camps, confronted mostly with the threat of pneumonia and high fever.

According to doctors involved in treating the patients, lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and bedding in the camps is causing the number of sick inside these camps to increase.
